6th Grade Band Parent Meeting
Thursday, August 31, 2006 @ Petal Middle School Band Hall
7:00pm

We will discuss how 6th Grade Band works and how to purchase an instrument. Representatives from Mississippi Music will be at this meeting to assist you with the many options availble to acquire an instrument.

About Middle School Band...

The Petal Middle School Band Program is composed of three levels: sixth grade (beginner), seventh grade, and eighth grade. Over 275 students in these three grades participate in the band program. Students in all of these classes receive instruction during the school day. Emphasis is placed in each rehearsal on enhancing each student's musical abilities.
Each class presents three concerts each year. The seventh and eight grade bands perform at a football game during the fall. In addition, these two bands attend a contest each Spring where they participate in concert and sightreading.

Which instrument Should I Play? I don't have any experience.

That's what beginner band is for!!! We will teach you what you need to know. In August, the band directors and your child will determine the instrument for which he/she is best suited. A child's personal preference and his/her physical features are impotant factors in this decision. If your child signs up for beginner band, he/she will be expected to purchase an instrument. However, please do not secure an
instrument until a decision has been made in the Fall as to which instrument best suites your child.

How an Instrument is Acquired?

It's Easy!!! Although owning an instrument is required for being in beginner band, please do not let the affordability hinder you from allowing your child to participate. There are several affordable options to acquiring an instrument. Local music stores have new or used instruments available on a lease/purchase plan.
Many 8th Grade band parents who have purchased upgrades on their child's instruments usually look to sell their beginner instruments for pennies on the dollar. Ads for those instruments will be on display at the beginning of the year.

What Extra Time is Involved in Beginner Band?

Very little extra time is involved in the 6th Grade Band. Band meets every day during regular school hours as a class. The beginner band performs three times during the year for concerts. There are no after school rehearsals in beginner band.

Music Education
Research

Skills learned in the Petal Band Program influence the students in many positive ways. Research clearly supports the benefits of participation in music instruction that go well beyond the domain of music. Higher self-perception, self-reliance and self esteem, higher motivation to achieve success, increased personal pride and satisfaction, increased positive integration with peers and adults, enhanced individual creativity, and the positive influence on a student's decision to persist in school are just a few of the benefits.
In a seven year study, the College Entrance Examination Board reported higher SAT scores for students that had participated in music. It has been demonstrated that musical performance transfers to success in taking foreign languages, math scores consistently 14 - 23 points above the national average; and a significant and positive impact on reading achievement.
