About Middle School Band...

The Petal Middle School Band Program is composed of three levels: sixth grade (beginner), seventh grade, and eighth grade. Over 275 students in these three grades participate in the band program. Students in all of these classes receive instruction during the school day. Emphasis is placed in each rehearsal on enhancing each student's musical abilities.
Each class presents three concerts each year. The seventh and eight grade bands perform at a football game during the fall. In addition, these two bands attend a contest each Spring where they participate in concert and sightreading.

Music Education
Research

Skills learned in the Petal Band Program influence the students in many positive ways. Research clearly supports the benefits of participation in music instruction that go well beyond the domain of music. Higher self-perception, self-reliance and self esteem, higher motivation to achieve success, increased personal pride and satisfaction, increased positive integration with peers and adults, enhanced individual creativity, and the positive influence on a student's decision to persist in school are just a few of the benefits.
In a seven year study, the College Entrance Examination Board reported higher SAT scores for students that had participated in music. It has been demonstrated that musical performance transfers to success in taking foreign languages, math scores consistently 14 - 23 points above the national average; and a significant and positive impact on reading achievement.
